Certification of German Documents

If your documents are to be used abroad, they may require certification or some other form of legalization. We provide a range of certification and legalization services including notarization, which you will find listed below. It can be very difficult to determine which type of certification your document will require; we are widely experienced in this field so if you are at all unsure which certification type is right for you please contact us for comprehensive and impartial advice.

Certification of German translations:

Certification by the translator

It is customary for all our translations to be certified by the translator themselves or by our translation agency. This verifies that the translation is true to the original and is an accurate English to German or German to English translation of the original document. This is the most rudimentary level of certification.

The cost of this certification is included in that of the translation; an extra charge may need to be applied if you require additional certified copies of the translation. Please click here for a list of our competitive prices.

Certification by a solicitor or notary

The signature of the translation issued in the above certification may be authenticated by a notary or solicitor. The translation is attached to a statutory document and to a copy of the original, and is signed by the translator in the presence of the solicitor or notary. This lends further credibility to the certification of the translation by the translator.

This certification will typically cost between €15 and €25, depending on the seal you require.

Notarization of German Translations

If you wish to use your document in a country in which the official language is not German, the translation of the document may need to be notarized. In this case, the translation is certified by a registered notary in addition to the certification issued by the translator.

Legalization of German Documents

Before the document will be considered legal abroad, it may require further legalization by a notary to confirm the country of origin of the document. This service typically costs between €15 and €25.

An Apostille stamp may be required to provide further authentication to the document; in this case, it is the notarization of the certification that is most commonly validated. This highest level of authentication will ensure that the document is accepted as legal and official in any country signed up to the Hague Convention. For more information on our Apostille Service and why you may require it, please contact us.

“True Copy of the Original” Certification

It may be necessary to obtain a number of copies of your original document. In this case, we can certify that these copies are true and accurate copies of the original. This typically costs between €10 and €15, depending on the type of seal you require.

Validation of German Translations

We may only certify those translations which have been produced by translators employed by our company. If however you already have a translation of a document which you wish to use, we can validate this translation. This will enable us to perform any of the certification services listed above on the translation.

It is our company policy to provide you with exemplary service and value for money. We ask that you inform us of the purpose for which the translation is to be used and, if possible, the type of certification you require so that we can ensure your document is issued with the level of authentication most appropriate to your needs. It is a demanding task to undertake legalization and certification of a document, and difficult to appreciate what level of certification is most appropriate.
